Hello everyone!
We have come to the end of our first month together this year. As we move into October, I just want to give you a rough outline of where we will be going in our studies. For Social Studies, we will be participating in the Student Vote campaign, which provides students a chance to become informed about our municipal election. The Student Vote wraps up with a simulated election, where students can see who would be elected if they were allowed to vote. For English language arts we will continue reading the Skeleton Tree and introduce a reading comprehension strategy that we will use throughout the year. In math we will be progressing with our Numeracy studies, moving on from conversion of fractions to decimals to percentage, to more complex ideas such as the ordering of decimals, as well as the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of decimals, fractions and percents. Finally, in Science, we are going to take advantage of the beautiful fall weather to study ecosystems, with ties in to bridge building. The bridge building exercises will lead into our structures and forces unit. Keep an eye out for updates and emails! I will be sending out a mass email for all field studies in October very soon! Hello everyone! I just wanted to take this opportunity to make a post about how things are going and what things look like in the classroom right now.
We are in the process of wrapping up our first inquiry project, and next week we will start our second one, which will tie together many of the concepts we are learning in our core subjects. In Math we have begun learning about numeracy involving fractions, decimals and percentages, while our Science unit is working on plant knowledge. We will be shifting to look at ecosystems next week in Science. Our social project on the Footprints of Exploration has begun, combining our base knowledge of pre-confederation explorers with research from vetted primary sources of information. Finally in Language Arts, we are reading the book "The Skeleton Tree" by Lain Lawrence. Everyone is very engaged with the characters and the plot, and today we are beginning a project that analyzes the characters deeply and asks the students to reflect on what they have learned so far. Thank you for reading, Matthew Barron-MacFadden Hello all!
First I would like to send a shout out to our parent volunteers, Thank you for coming along and helping our students enjoy a safe learning experience! We had an excellent day despite the turn in the weather. The walk to the Agrium center was uneventful, and all of our students asked astute questions of the Journey 2050 staff, demonstrating both student's interest and engagement in the field study. Students were respectful of the presenters and the space, and learned much about how we will have to start changing our thinking in order to support Earth's population by the year 2050. Our work today has been focused on debriefing from the experience, and learning how to take the rough notes we collected at the experience and refine them into study notes we can use for the future. This work has been done in our field journals. All in all, I think our first field study of the 2017/18 school year was a successful and enjoyable learning experience, and has really set the tone for our coming year!
