Hello Parents/Guardians and Students,
Well, week two is behind us now. This has been another huge week with the students working very hard. It has been great to get to know everyone better and see their strengths. Social Studies: Students finished their citizenship project and shared in groups. Math: Students worked on problem-solving tasks focused on patterning. Next week we will really dive into the patterning unit. Science: Next week students will finish their hurricane investigation. They will build an informational bulletin board to share the results of their investigation with the rest of the school. Next week we will begin working on some hands on activities with the Plants and Fibres unit. Language Arts: We have read up to Chapter 5 of the Skeleton Tree. We have been learning about themes and character development. We will also begin paragraph writing next week. It will be focused on forming opinions and how to support them. Field Studies: Our first field study was a huge success! Stay tuned for upcoming dates. Thank you all very much for the support at home, and I look forward to meeting all of you next week for Parent-Teacher conferences. Brandie Well, our first week is almost over and it has flown by! Here is what we have worked on so far this week:
Math: Students worked in table groups and completed centres based on grade 6 review. Concepts covered included factoring, prime factorization, greatest common factor, vocabulary, and arrays. we will begin our first topic next week, which is number patterns. Social Studies: We started a mini-project on citizenship, and what it means to be a Canadian citizen. The social studies themes this year are Citizenship and Identity. In this project students are describing citizenship, how being a Canadian citizen may differ from being a citizen in other places in the work, and then featuring a Canadian example of citizenship in action. Science: We are completing lessons based on the elements of Inquiry. On Wednesday we looked at what makes an excellent journal entry, today we practiced making good scientific observations, and tomorrow we will focus on questioning. We are doing this work through the lens of studying hurricanes, as this is quite timely. Next week student's will be creating their own investigation related to hurricanes, and drawing on elements of the Heat and Temperature and the Interactions and Ecosystems curriculum. Language Arts: On Wednesday we started our first read aloud of the year. We are reading "The Skeleton Key" by Iain Lawrence. Please ask your children about the book so far. It really is a cliff-hanger right now! Through this book we will be looking at elements of a story and literary devices. Updates: -Please remember that the fine arts/CTF selection form is due tomorrow! -Field Study information can be found in the field study section of the website. We will review expectations on Monday. |
